The stuff of dreams and for dreamers because the Spanish constitution forbids it, so it will never happen. And should it, by a fluke of nature/politics, they would lose EU status and would not be picked up as a member state. The last president is now in exile as a criminal fugitive (Puigdemont), and in 1940, Catalan president Companys was executed for declaring Catalonian independence. So you can see that such a thing will never happen.

Thanks for the clarification Francesc. So basically, if the 2017 vote had been won by the Catalan region and accepted by the Spanish constitution then that would have been the first time Catalonia would have been truly independent.
