Picture of the Day - 10
Today’s picture should be easier than the last one for most of you, especially if you’re English. If you look closely, you should be able to make out a river that runs through a valley (or a dale as it’s called in this case) and under a viaduct.
This viaduct was built to carry a railway line over the river, but after it was closed down became a popular walking trail, of which there are many in this National Park.
There are two distinct parts to this National Park: Generally speaking, the harsher moorland landscape lies to the north, and a softer landscape of limestone valleys lies to the south.
You can have 1 point for guessing the name of the National Park, 2 points for naming the part of the National Park that this dale is in, and 3 points for the exact location.

OK, this time I just get the 1 point for recognising it’s in the Peak District, a beautiful part of the world. But what I can say is what a wondrous verdant haven your picture shows. Makes me want to go back there and take a long and dreamy wander through Monsal Dale! 🙂
One of the reasons for ‘Picture of the Day’ Alli is to inspire people to visit the location – or return if they already have 🙂

Thank you Pat. This place is in Derbyshire, but as regards novels set in Yorkshire, have you read any of James Herriot’s books?
All of them and have occasionally caught the splendid BBC series on PBS.
I loved those books and I even met the man himself when he was still practising in Thirsk.
No points for me this week, it’s not an area I’m familiar with so would never have guessed it. A good photo though, and it all looks very green.
One day maybe? The Peak District is doable for you I would have thought.
Easily doable but not somewhere I’ve really thought of going. My only experience of the Derbyshire area is camping several times at Elvaston Steam Rally and walking along the Trent & Mersey Canal to where the Rivers Trent and Derwent meet, also a couple of visits to the very unusual Calke Abbey, an unstately stately home,
As far as stately homes go, Chatsworth House isn’t far from Monsal Head
Despite much of my work involving protected sites, National Parks, National Landscapes and National Nature Reserves, my knowledge of the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales is rather poor – I need to brush up. I reckon I got about 0.5 point today.
LOL. I imagine that you know a lot more about the environment and wildlife in these sort of places than the majority of people, so I’ll give you a bonus point for that alone 😄
