There are a few small areas of habitation dotted around the bay, but on the whole it’s a very unspoilt part of the coast, with Burgh Island being its most prominent feature. Inland, the scenery is typical of the South Hams countryside with rolling hills interspersed with small villages.

Today’s location sounds as though it ought to be in France but it’s not, although I’m sure there are some people who think it should be.
As the picture shows, the lighthouse can be reached by a causeway at low tide, and it’s the extreme tidal ranges that have caused numerous shipwrecks. There’s a memorial nearby commemorating the rescue of 307 passengers and crew from an inter-island ferry that struck a rock here in 1995.
There are also other landmarks dotted around the area that were part of the German defence of this and other islands that were occupied during WWII.
